‘The Godfather’ – 50 years on: a cinematic masterpiece tarnished by profit

The Godfather was released 50 years ago today. The film remains a masterpiece to this day, brilliantly depicting the ruthless logic of capitalism. But the third instalment of Cappola's trilogy reveals the suffocating effect of profit on cinema.

Tiff Macklem, the governor of the Bank of Canada, recently told businesses that it was their duty to attack the living standards of workers for the sake of inflation. Despite the fact the corporations are making record profits, and there is absolutely zero evidence linking wages to inflation, Canada’s top banker insisted that workers must be forced to suffer. There can be no better evidence that capitalism is an anti-worker system and that workers must fight for its overthrow.

Come abbiamo scritto in precedenza, nell’ultimo mese il regime di Ranil Wickremesinghe in Sri Lanka ha scatenato la repressione contro sindacalisti e attivisti di sinistra. Ora il regime ha intensificato la repressione, utilizzando la famigerata legge sulla prevenzione del terrorismo (PTA) per detenere gli attivisti per lunghi periodi senza processo. Domenica 28 agosto si terranno proteste davanti all’ufficio del Consiglio per i diritti umani delle Nazioni Unite a Ginevra e presso le ambasciate dello Sri Lanka in tutto il mondo alle 14:00 ora locale.

Poco più di un mese fa, il 9 luglio, le masse insorte dello Sri Lanka hanno preso d’assalto la residenza del presidente Gotabaya Rajapaksa a Colombo. Questo è stato il punto più alto delle proteste in tutta l’isola, in corso da marzo. Avevano già fatto cadere tre governi, il governatore della Banca Centrale e gli stessi fratelli di Gota: il ministro delle Finanze Basil Rajapaksa e il primo ministro Mahinda Rajapaksa, allora in una posizione di forza, costretto alle dimissioni il 9 maggio.
