Why we need theory

The theoretical struggle is a key component of the class struggle. As Lenin explained, without revolutionary theory there can be no revolutionary movement. Capitalism is facing the deepest crisis in its history. The ruling class can offer no real way forward for the vast majority of people. That is the reason they spread a whole array of confused and reactionary ideas.

Engels explained that, alongside the economic and political struggle, there was the equally important struggle for theory. The In Defence of Marxism magazine is joining this struggle, as a tool and a weapon for revolutionary class fighters all over the world, offering serious Marxist analysis on theoretical questions and burning issues of the labour movement. Only the ideas of genuine Marxism can act as a guide to action in the struggle to overthrow capitalism on a world scale.

Contents of the new issue

In this new issue #36, Adam Booth looks at one of capitalism’s oldest myths around the efficiency of the so-called 'free-market' and its superiority to a socialist planned economy. This article responds to the Libertarian ideas of the Austrian School of economics, whose 'theories' amount to vitriolic support of the unrestricted rule of capital at the expense of the needs of society (The Austrian School of Economics: Capitalism’s Free-market Fanatics). Rob Sewell looks at the life and ideas of Lenin, uncovering his genuine ideas and how they developed alongside the tumultuous events in Russia during his formative years (The Young Lenin). Finally, Fred Weston and Parson Young trace Rosa Luxemburg's thought during her political life and clarify the differences and convergences between her and the Bolsheviks (Rosa Luxemburg and the Bolsheviks: Dispelling the Myths)
